Self-employment is not the best fit for everyone and it is not a quick fix for immediate employment or income needs. When working with Self Employment Specialists, the business planning process is much like a training course in business, finance, marketing, operations and more. The average length of time a VR client spends working on their business plan is 12 - 18 months. Add another 2 months for plan approval, 3 months for purchasing and 2 months for business set up and most clients will be open for business in about two years. This timeframe is based on an average of all VR clients' individualized performance.
Decision making, self-motivation, and problem solving skills are just a few of the traits that every business owner has to exercise on a daily basis. If the individual client does not possess these skills, then supports will be necessary to make the business viable. Karen has assisted many VR Counselors with valuable information to present to clients who are considering self-employment.

We encourage counselors to call prior to sending a referral for self-employment to discuss the client’s specific situation and business concept. There is often some preliminary market research or regulatory determination assignments that can be given to the client to determine feasibility at a very preliminary level. Once these assignments are completed and feasibility is still possible, then the client can be provided Karen Rankin-Magee’s information if they would like to interview her prior to choosing a CBTAC.
